Tree grafts and tree shapes

Looking up some non-medically terrifying images of grafts for a talk on Guix I'm giving on Friday, and @Bassam Kurdali suggested tree grafts, which lead me to thie crazy-ass article on tree shaping. So coooool!

I have the "Arborsculpture" book! It's really good. On a related note, I've also been reading up on Niwaki, to reshape some of the older trees in my yard into less random shapes.
It's really thought-provoking; for some reason, people in the US (and evidently in other Western countries) get a fear of pruning or cutting trees ingrained in them somehow. Like, fear that it hurts the plant. I even see this in Master Gardeners; members of the public think that cutting or tying back tree branches is detrimental to the health of the tree....

I finished Hocus Pocus by Vonnegut, made some more headway into The Snow Queen by Joan Vinge (I would like to read the other one some day), and made it a bit further into a collection of William Gibson short stories. We also ran into a used book store and we couldn't help walking out with some more books (including the Gibson collection). Morgan also found a pop-up book on ancient Roman artwork, and given that's her field of study, it was an amusing and delightful find. Also a beautifully illustrated book compiling 19th century alphabet adaptations, usually with a poem and drawing for each letter. (Morgan had a her own pile of books!)
Also I illustrated (in pencil and ink!) the next MediaGoblin release art, and Morgan did a lovely job coloring it in (with some very nice color pencils!).
We really did spend most of the time drinking tea and reading books. It was a great way to reunite, and we both felt very happy. Go figure, now I miss her even more. Which just goes to show how important meeting togeher was!

I converted over my mail setup today. That was one of the remaining total-blockers on me spending most of my day in GuixSD.
The last major blocker is packaging "assword".
BTW, @David Thompson has started a wip-mediagoblin branch. I hope to help this weekend. Hopefully we'll have MediaGoblin in Guix soon!

@Diane Trout That is likely to be the general policy, if we can make it happen. I'm not sure if bundling will be okay.
At first MediaGoblin demo on Guix, there may be a "cheater" route of using the minified JS, but I'd like to go the full "from source" route.
It's too bad the javascript packaging situation is so exhausting.

It looks so innocuous, just a handful of unremarkable bower dependencies ...
Bundled JS source plus minification as a build step will be a good first step. Unmangling JavaScript build systems in general is a can of worms I wish to defer for now.

The W3C has announced the First Public Working Draft status of ActivityPub and Micropub. Both of these standards are being worked on for the SocialWG group

There is something I'm unclear about (and arguably I haven't read much, or at least enough, to answer this on my own).
ActivityPub seems to be an interactive protocol. Is there some sort of separate document representation format that doesn't need ActivityPub to exist (but that ActivityPub would exist to exchange), or is it all defined together?

If I understand your question, that'd be ActivityStreams 2.0.

I (personal idle wish) would love it if Conservancy were long-term responsible for running identi.ca, and made it possible to get new accounts -- for Conservancy supporters. I know some people hate the idea of an overly important node, but I think those people are wrong on the internet. :) With proper stewardship very popular nodes are necessary to compete.

@clacke - If increasing video bandwidth is a concern, keep an eye on the Daalva video codec, or NetVC or whatever it ends up being called.

I'm really worried that we're not seeing more software-freedom-oriented analysis and implementation of AI stuff.
The AI winter has fully thawed, but the concerns of user freedom in this environment are still in the freezer.

I wonder if a torrent-like method to distribute files would be suitable.
IPFS perhaps, or Freenet. If one, as a creator, has the storage and bandwidth to provide this, when one moves onto the next project.

Yeah, egardless if one uses git-lfs, git-annex or whatever solution, in the end someone needs to store all those bytes. :-)
Not to mention providing bandwidth for people to download them.
I guess the hopeful part is that Moore (for storage and bandwidth) might outrun increasing video bandwidth?

The office is super posh. I'm not used to this much luxury. For-profit tech companies are weird!
Sitting at my desk. They're mostly like: here's your desk, use whatever stuff you want, make cool stuff happen.
Time to make cool things happen! The next few months are targeting towards MediaGoblin 1.0.

Lots of people think that "making of" and "behind the scenes" add value to a work. If you are trying to create your own works, even more so. If you get access to the things referred to in the "making of", even better. If you have all the rights to release things based on those things, even better still.
Think about how much stuff you don't share when you're releasing a binary, even as freeware. Think how much even free software didn't share back when we relied solely on tarball releases. Why did we go to publishing the complete repos?
I don't think it's strained at all to talk about preferred forms of modification for things other than software. Most of most git repos are more or less discarded or ignored. The fact that the full history is there doesn't confuse or distract anyone. And then that day comes when someone needs to go back and trace why something was done the way it was done.
Why was there a glitch in that tree rendering in that hypothetical movie I saw? Oh, actually it was because they were working around some limitation in the software they were using, and that limitation no longer exists because the movie was made ten years ago. And then I can fix it and rerender that part of the movie. I don't get what's difficult about seeing the value of this.
Longevity of cultural artifacts is very much increased if you have the precursor forms and the instructions for turning those into the finished form.
I have the sheets for Queen's Greatest Hits and Queen's Greatest Hits II. One of the greatest gifts I ever received. They have tremendous value to me, in addition to the value of being able to hear the finished rendering in the speakers. Just seeing that wow, for this song, John Deacon actually tunes one of his strings differently from the usual EADG, that teaches you something.
And seeing "Synth 2: Multiple laser beams" in the Flash Gordon sheets is hilarious.
