That middle part is called "the plateau of despair" and where you need a constant cycle of interesting things to talk about. And you'll still be frustrated during it. Fundraising sucks, and empathy to all who endure that painful cycle! :) Hardest months of my life were spent campaigning...

@[email protected] blocking parasitic unwanted messaging is a pretty difficult thing to do in a federated protocol. Also it's unclear where the original poster was hosting. I've certainly seen that certain cheap hosting providers just constantly send me spam. Maybe he picked a bad provider?
@Diane Trout I agree re: blocking parasitic activity is difficult. It's something I'm spending more time thinking about and doing research into, but I don't know enough to recommend actual solutions.
btw I am interested in these kinds of distributed collaborative filtering approaches, but it would require work to "prove" it as a useful approach...

I can see how that distributed filter would work nicely for recommending posts and content to other users.
Though if you can manage the community validation step listed at the end of that paper, that's probably sufficient to help control email spam.
That's probably why the big email companies just trust each other. They're run by people and people can only manage ad-hoc relationships with a few hundred other people.

Here's a 128x128 version of the pump.io icon, extracted from the favicon.ico of a random Pump server. The actual image is 140x140 because I added some margins.
We can use this as an avatar for the "Pump.io Community" accounts.
Maybe we could add a shadow or some other effect. What do you think?

@[email protected] it depends on the software: if it is a library I wouldn't use it (except maybe for playing around), but for applications something new may be interesting and worth trying, expecially if upstream is responsive to suggestions for things that don't work yet.

Well I spoke out of turn, because there wasn't a riot in Oakland. I am of course dedicated to non-violence, it is just that when people talk about protest in Oakland, they call them riots. From what I've read, there was some looting and vandalism during the protest on Monday. I don't agree with that. But I am okay with them shutting down the highway, because while talk may be cheap (I don't agree), it is of non-zero value.If possible, I am sure the majority of protesters would prefer that all protests be without looting and vandalism. But if even one person does that, elsewhere it is reported as a riot. So we can disagree of course, but I wanted to clarify that I don't think riot-ing per se is a good idea, but I will concede that at this point I read riot and protest as the same... ^_^

I haven't read the actual US Code, but $EMPLOYER mostly "suggests" we refrain from appearing to endorse extremism, violence, destruction, crime, and from contact with those who do. And, of course, that we make sure no one can be mistake our personal postings as speaking for the agency.

The other part of it is that not all protesters are local residents, but after the protests, when damaged or destroyed businesses are no longer operating, it is the local residents, along with the businesses' owners and employees that deal with long-term consequences. Years ago, when Los Angeles had riots after the verdicts in the Rodney King beating case, I said the destruction of neighborhood businesses would be the riots' greatest long-term impact. Not suggesting they hold riots elsewhere, but certainly not in their own communities.
Who better to comment on this than Dr. King?
“Now I wanted to say something about the fact that we have lived over these last two or three summers with agony and we have seen our cities going up in flames. And I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I’m absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results. But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.”
It's a thorny issue to speak out on, so I'm glad someone so eloquent and acutely aware of the issues involved did it so clearly and distinctly.

Google's broken searching for the win

As you know, over the last month Google has down-ranked sites that receive a high number of DMCA notices. This means your most popular torrent sites for illegal things probably don't show up at the top of the search results like they used to. http://torrentfreak.com/unknown-sites-dominate-google-pirate-search-results-141109/
Good! Great! What Google has done -- explicitly broke its own search and ranking mechanism to benefit 3rd parties -- has two obvious implications for everyone.
First, it means more sites that weren't famous will rise to the top. Other sites with the same content were in the search rankings before. Under the new formula, smaller sites benefit because they have less exposure and fewer takedown notices, so they'll rise in the rankings. This helps diversify and therefore stabilize the search market.
Second, it means we won't rely on Google to be good for web searches. People thought Google had a great algorithm. Maybe they did, but if they're publicly abandoning it to bow to the will of the RIAA and MPAA, they probably have already done so secretly in the past for other groups and will almost certainly do so more, both publicly and secretly, in the future. So you can't depend on them for a good search. You never could, really, but we conveniently ignored that. They're a good option as long as they aren't the only option.
Then there's the corollary for Google. Groveling to the RIAA and MPAA only makes Google look weak. Now every other company who could benefit by Google stacking the deck will be publicly whining and complaining and hand-wringing about how they're screwed and it's all Google's fault. And you know what -- it is Google's fault because now Google's in the business of picking winners and losers. They just did this with music and movies. Before, Google could pretend it was just neutral, and anyone who wanted a higher ranking should make a better website. Now it has proven to everyone it's not, but it wishes that weren't the case. The porn industry is already complaining about porn sites with unauthorized copying achieving high ranks. So are the German newspapers. Who's next?

If you need to copy-paste, how about you write in Pump.io first, and then copy-paste to Twitter?
You also have nice tools and services like pump2tweet.com or PumpTweet to make things more automatic =)

I don't think I've ever expressed this particular fear: folks using non-free, heavily-tracked, propietary services that have pleasing and very functional interfaces will be way more productive than those of us that refuse to use such things, and are therefore at a disadvantage.
I am not worried for myself, because I use mutt for email, and my life is relatively simple, but if I allowed myself to use more of these functional yet horrible products, I wonder if I could get more done. Hmmm.
