We had a great experience at SCaLE, met tons of great folks, reconvened with past acquaintances. I (Aaron) gave a talk on GNU/Linux music making… lots of things falling into place.
We now have shirts and stickers for those supportive enough to donate to us prior to the actual Snowdrift.coop mechanism being in place (see https://snowdrift.coop/merchandise )…
Next stuff: William "Salt" Hale, our new Community Director will be giving a talk and otherwise promoting us at FOSDEM this coming weekend, find him and say "hi" if you'll be there!

I'm struggling folks. I have too many contacts to sort, and I just am finding Thunderbird's contact management clunky and inefficient and have complaints about Kontact… I mean, if this is all there was, I could live with it, but I feel like I'm constantly fighting things. When I use Google Contacts, I'm fighting another battle — telling Google who I know. I hate this.
At some level, this is an impossible battle. Nearly everyone is on Twitter and LinkedIn and Facebook and Google whatever and so on. If I connect with people and want to note my contacts, I can't manage to clutter my personal contacts with hundreds of entries unless I can really effectively sort them, such as with tags that are easy to filter quickly.
I want to mark all the different sorts of contacts on my own private system and not tell corporations who I know. But I feel like this is eating all my time and energy. I'm about ready to give in and just finally more actively connect with everyone on LinkedIn and Twitter (ugh!!) — of course, I'll still use pump.io and some private notes and such but…
What should I do? It feels like useless self-sacrifice sometimes to just avoid these things unless I can find a solution that is truly powerful enough otherwise.
Please please please come help us build Snowdrift.coop, donate to our development etc. — I can't see any other way out of this conundrum other than really changing the economy and better funding free/libre/open solutions.
Anyway, I did check out Owncloud's contacts which are okay, but there's no search feature even. Etc. etc. everything is just about usable and not good. I would love to hear about something promising or a better solution…

I don't care if it's a web interface. I basically wish that Thunderbird's contact system was actually flexible and well-designed, then I'd be happy.
I want to manage hundreds of contacts and be able to tag them well so it is easy to focus on relevant contacts for various purposes. And I want a nice interface, easy to make notes and to add any arbitrary amount of emails, relationships, websites etc.
Google Contacts is closest but fundamentally compromises my control and privacy. Otherwise, Thunderbird, Kontact, and Owncloud all have mixed pros and cons where none is quite acceptable.
Sounds like a job for mind-mapping software.
Do you really need anything more complex than a simple spreadsheet/database file?
There's no good way to manage arbitrary amounts of tags, groups, labeled phone numbers and emails etc. in spreadsheets or plain DB without a decent GUI.

I didn't make a completely new ideal thing, I just removed the bullshit references to "benefits of DRM" and talk of "protections" and "rights".
I think it's perfectly reasonable that Mozilla was backed into a corner and decided to accept including DRM in Firefox. But there's absolutely no excuse for parroting the pro-DRM propaganda. There's NO reason Mozilla should pretend to be sympathetic to the concerns of the DRM-pushers.

Indeed. Did you use the "remix" feature of webmaker-or-whatever-it-is-called? I wonder why "remixed from @stacy" isn't showing in the the details top-drop-or-whatever-that-element-is-called like it does in https://stacy.makes.org/thimble/MTUxMzI5MjI4OA==/what-is-drm ?
yeah, I did the "remix" feature. I couldn't otherwise figure out how to contact Stacy or suggest changes or do anything else. The link to her Mozilla profile wasn't helpful.
I suggest Mozilla is fully influenced by corporate interests now. Who else would encourage them to refer to copyright, property, theft, and the benefits of DRM in this way?
What does fully influenced mean? What corporate interests?
I bet most Mozillians aware of the issue at all think they are doing the right thing, making and describing subtle tradeoffs.
Why has pro-freedom movement failed to convince more people that DRM is always bad? Is it because it/we are fully influenced by corporate interested who encourage us to make unconvincing arguments?

This is 2+ years late, but finally Snowdrift.coop has email lists! http://lists.snowdrift.coop/
Of course, there's also our blog https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/blog and feed https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/feed and other activity on the site itself, and our #snowdrift freenode channel. Those will all stay active.
I don't like too much fragmentation of discussion, but nothing else we've had adequately replaces the value of traditional email lists (at this time).
The other news is: we've made our choice post-Gitorious. Our code is now at https://git.gnu.io/snowdrift/snowdrift — and we have a new BEGINNERS.md file with a complete getting-started for contributing even for those with basically no experience with any of the technologies we use. We care about welcoming everyone!
The links to the email lists and the new code will be up on the site sometime soon. :ots of other news coming, pushing ahead… hard work and all… we always love more folks coming to help. Thanks all! Thanks to our many contributors already, and especially to @mattl for getting git.gnu.io set up!

@o1me IMO celebrity effects for faif projects are needed -- more very strong projects, clear winners among faif projects that are strong enough to destroy proprietary competition are needed. Marketing, sales, distribution -- creating celebrities -- are what proprietary entities actually do -- let's finally really compete with and destroy them.

@o1me the simplest answer is: (A) we're just going with our best proposal to launch, and can adapt as needed, and (B) our mission right now is to get to the point where celebrity-FLO-project-takes-all is the sort of problem we have! (versus the status quo of: even celebrity projects are struggling and failing too often).

I think it is a reasonable idea for an entity (probably a government) that wishes to distribute funds to creators. It is fundamentally flawed if copyright holders used as a proxy for creators. It should have zilch to do with copyright. -

@Mike, wow, I missed that. I suggested they fix that, and I suspect they will. They're well-intentioned folks, if a bit, um, odd (I don't really get the logo, some sort of enthusiastic geek or something). They largely deferred to Snowdrift.coop's reviews for their selection of endorsed tools: http://librefunding.org/tools/
On the other hand, the folks involved are specifically people who I'd long ago tried to recruit to help Snowdrift.coop and instead they announced continuation of their vague plans for more unnecessary redundant platforms. Except that now I'm happy that they're focusing mostly on their more meta site and conference, and they seem like good folks. I hope they fix that copyright nonsense ASAP.
http://librefunding.org/ fixed the copyright notice to CC-BY-SA. It was just an oversight accepting defaults from Wordpress.
